The Internet of Things: A System That Pays You to Reduce Your Electricity Usage

ohm connect logoCurtis Tongue will present a primer on smart grid demand-response and a demo of OhmConnect. OhmConnect is a Demand/Response web-based application that allows many people to pool their response to fluctuations in demand on the grid. OhmConnect sells “load reductions” to the Independent System Operator by having consumers of power reduce their demand at certain times when power is expensive to produce.  Some of this is automated – Internet-connected devices in the home can be directly controlled to reduce demand.  Some is manual: a Text message or email to users prompts them to turn off some load – defer laundry, turn off lights, etc.  Participants are paid for their contribution to the aggregate reduction that can be sold to the grid, as measured by their smart meter vs. historical use pattern.
