Almost all of us like eating sweet things, and we would like to forget that food loaded with sugar is not good for us. Scientists believe that ten years from now, between 20% to 50% of the entire world's population will be classified as obese. We shall view “Sugar—the elephant in the kitchen”, in which Dr. Lustig, Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at UC San Francisco, assesses the health dangers of sugar and its link to Type-2 diabetes and the global obesity epidemic. He is the author of several books and many articles on childhood obesity, including “Obesity Before Birth”. Then we shall see a neuroscientist’s perspective by viewing Dr. Amy Reichelt’s “This is Your Brain on Sugar”. The role of sugar is really complex, as Stanford Chemistry Professor Carolyn Bertozzi will tell us in “The sugar coating on your cells is trying to tell you something”.

Mei-Ling Shek, has degrees in chemistry and applied physics, and has worked as a scientist and engineer in national laboratories as well as startup companies (telecom and solar). She has also taught physics and introductory nanotechnology courses. Besides volunteering for the EcoGreen Group, she is a member of the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmental organizations.
